Summary
[edit]DescriptionWelcombe Bank Obelisk - geograph.org.uk - 120081.jpg |
English: Welcombe Bank Obelisk. Raised in 1876 by Robert Needham Philips in honour of his brother Mark Philips and also commemorating their father. This obelisk http://pmsa.cch.kcl.ac.uk/BM/WAsaSAtg023.htm on the hill above the Welcombe Hotel is visible for miles up and down the vale of the Avon. Welcombe was once part of the chief manor of Old Stratford and in Shakespeare's time the Combes family had a considerable estate here. http://www.combs-families.org/combs/records/england/war/associated.htm In 1845 Mark Philips, son of a northern industrialist purchased Welcombe Manor and in the 1860s rebuilt it as the family seat. Today this forms the Welcombe Hotel. Mark Philips was also notable as Manchester's first Member of Parliament. http://www.shakespeare.org.uk/content/view/85/85/
Monumental stones in each of the four sides of the pedestal commemorate the Philips family. 121627 121631 121626 121625 Notice the variations in the spelling of "Philips" depending upon the source. The engraving on the obelisk uses "Philips" so this is taken as the reference. |
