Summary
[edit]DescriptionWeir at Sunbury Lock - geograph.org.uk - 232709.jpg |
English: A small side-weir portion of Sunbury weir. Two smaller weirs are above due to a very long thin, further island. Like many weirs on the Thames this is a side or mainly side weir – making flow weaker over each metre of its width. Also sluice-gate controlled and with an adjustable head. This means it normally controls much of the river's flow, but can only allow delay when the river is in spate (highest flow, making high flood risk). Most islands and lowest meadows flooded in parts of most winters, that is before building weirs and locks, for the 45 navigable heads of water. Since their building such flooding is rare save in certain places, however has increased in recent decades. Windsor and Maidenhead are protected by a relief channel, the Jubilee River, and this weir is being upgraded in the early 2020s to increase its maximal flow along with the two further weirs lying downstream. |
