Summary
[edit]DescriptionWeir and cross-harbour links, Belfast (1) - geograph.org.uk - 1245098.jpg |
English: Weir and cross-harbour links, Belfast (1). The construction of the Lagan weir 347520 and the cross-harbour road and railway 4750 was the probably the biggest civil engineering project ever undertaken entirely within the Belfast city boundary. The site was almost completely open to public view. It was easy to observe the progress of the work. My only regret was that, in those pre-digital days, I did not take more photographs. Continue to 1245165.
This is a series of shots taken during the construction. It is not, by any means, comprehensive but is intended to give an indication of how the work progressed - often (to the lay observer) in an apparently random manner. This view (from Queen's Quay) across the Lagan to Donegall Quay was just after the start of the work. Preliminary piling is underway at Donegall Quay (middle right) for the weir. There is a dredger and a barge-mounted crane in the river. The Heysham shed (blue building - middle left) was still standing on Donegall Quay. |
