Description
English: Drawing of two "Ingelred" (Ingelrii) swords, dated to the 11th to 12th century, from Anders Lorange, Den yngre jernalders sværd (reproduced by R. Wegeli, Inschriften auf mittelalterlichen Schwertklingen, as Figs. 4-5, p. 14).

Wegeli (1904) was aware of four swords of this type (Oakeshott (1960) knows of "about 20"). The drawings are reproduced (rotated by 90 degrees) from Lorange (1889), pages 15 and 16.

  • Above (Fig. 4): A sword found in the Isac (a tributary of the Vilaine), at the time (1904) kept in Nantes Museum (now lost or in a private collection?). The inscription is read as INGELRED, on the reverse side (according to Lorange) FIT (=fecit).
  • Below (Fig. 5): A sword found in the Fyrisån near Uppsala, Sweden (kept in the State Museum, Stockholm), the inscription is read as INGEL.AH. by Lorange. Also shown are is the characteristic pattern ornament on the reverse side.

Original description by Lorange:

Fabrikør J. Brender deponeret i Statens hist. Museum i Stockholm. — Det afbildes paa næste Side [= Wegeli's fig. 5], efter Hr. Prof O. Montelius's Meddelelse. Navnet turde nærmest læses some Ingelram eller Ingebrant.
Ingelgar Erik Blodøxes Myntmester i Northumberland (Schive Pl. I). Ingeldus (vel nærmest vort Ingjald) paa en Beltespænde fra Dietersheim i Rhinhessen, nu i Museet i Mainz (L. Lindenscmit, Handbuch I, S. 366, Fig. 344, Alterthümer 3die B., 11te H. Tab. V, samt Beilage til 3die B., 9de H.; S. 7).
