Summary
[edit]DescriptionWe drove throughthat tiny doorway! (34846812434).jpg | After viewing the terracotta warriors my guide and I were thoroughly drenched to the bone in sudden cloudburst. And we had just one umbrella between us. Braving the rains, lunch and the half an hour ride to the Xi'an city wall was no use- the rains simply did not stop. A bicycle ride on the wall was the next item in the order of the day but sadly that was not to be. All the bicycles had been taken off anyway, even if we had decided to ride in the rain. Oh well. Here we are then, at the Xi'an City Wall. We drove through that doorway! The first landmark visitors will encounter in Xi'an is the ancient city wall, which surrounds the old city in a large square area. The northern side runs parallel to the railway. Xi'an was originally a walled city, and even today the wall is considered a landmark dividing the city into the inner and outer areas. The city wall is massive — tall, long and thick. The South Gate and North Gate are the two main entrances to the inner city. The city itself is neatly arranged along the city wall. Since the ancient weapons did not have the power to break through a wall and the only way for an enemy to enter the city was by attacking the gate of the city wall. This is why complicated gate structures were built within the wall. The wall includes four gates and they are respectively named as Changle (meaning eternal joy) in the east, Anding (harmony and peace) in the west, Yongning (eternal peace) in the south and Anyuan (forever harmony) in the north. More notes as we go along. (Xi'an, Shaanxi, China, May 2017) |
