English: The failing leadership of a poorly run local council needs to promise jam tomorrow. Something simple and up-beat.
Back in Summer 2013, the urgent need was some PR fluff to paper over the cracks until the London borough elections in May 2014. So what modest pledges could Haringey Council display on an "information" sign in Wood Green? Well, plainly it couldn't guarantee clean streets. Or, at least, not opposite the main River Park House office block. Nor would such a pledge persuade many people in High Road Tottenham in the Seven Sisters ward represented by the Dear Leader Cllr Claire Kober and her Dearest political ally, Cllr Joe Goldberg. Should Councillors Kober and Goldberg promise to fix loose and broken pavements in the Noel Park ward of their chum Cllr Alan Strickland? Hmm. Unconvincing. What about monitoring and then rapidly cleaning-off graffiti? Well, maybe if Prince Charles was due to visit. So it had to be potholes. Safe ground? Probably very unsafe.
