Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Due to economic and political instability in Venezuela, a new settlement of Wayúu communities is rapidly growing near the small town of Uribia in La Guajira, Colombia. Thousands of Wayúu people are relocating to the Colombian side of the border, searching for better opportunities.

The Wayúu community relies heavily on handicrafts, particularly weaving, typically practiced by Wayúu women, with unique techniques and designs passed down from generation to generation. However, the influx of Wayúu people to Uribia due to the Venezuelan migration crisis has resulted in an oversupply of their handcrafted products, driving down prices and making it difficult for Wayúu artisans to make a living.

This photograph shows a Wayúu woman exhibiting a “chinchorro,” a type of hammock they sleep in, along with several typical Wayúu bags available for purchase.
