Summary
[edit]DescriptionWave group space time.svg | A bichromatic group of gravity waves on the surface of deep water. The number of waves for a group in space is different from the number of waves in for the same group in time, due to frequency dispersion: the group velocity is half the phase velocity, for the shown case. The upper (blue) line is a snapshot of the water surface at a certain moment in time. The lower (orange) line is a time trace of the surface elevation at a certain fixed horizontal position. For the shown case, there are 5¾ waves between two wave group nodes in space, while there a 11½ waves between two wave group nodes in time. |
