Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A view of the Ecology Building at Wave Hill Public Garden in the Bronx, as seen during a June 2022 visit. Once the complex's Recreation Building, this charming stone-block structure, uniquely embedded into the hillside behind the house, was connected to the adjacent Glyndor Mansion via a tile-lined tunnel. Among other amenities, it once contained a bowling alley decorated with a mural painted by Frederick Samuel Dellenbaugh featuring American Indian-themed scenes inspired by a recent trip to Alaska. The exterior still remains largely true to the original Colonial Revival-style design conceived in 1909 by architects Heins & LaFarge: note the angular window heads and ornamental keystones framing the window to the right of the entrance, the slanted scroll brackets underneath the projecting cornice, and the handsome stone balustrade on the perimeter of what's now a pleasant rooftop terrace. Nowadays, Wave Hill has converted it to house classroom and event space and serve as base of operations for student crews in their Forest Management Project.
