Notes |
The style suggests a date of c. 1719 when Watteau visited England. Rosenberg and Prat note that according to Edmond de Goncourt (Catalogue raisonné... d'Antoine Watteau, 1875) an inscription in the hand of Hugh Howard, formerly on the verso of the drawing, identified the engraver as Bernard Baron, "M. Baron the Graver, by A. Watteau", but recent commentators have pointed out that at the time when Baron met Watteau in England he was only 23 years of age and that Nicolas Dorigny, who would have been in his mid sixties, may be a more likely candidate. Moreover, there is no particular reason to think that the drawing was made by Watteau in England; the furntiture as far as one can see appears to be French. Another possibility is Nicolas Vleughels who has a similar long nose (see drawings of him by Watteau), but only one engraving by Vleughels is known. Rosenberg and Prat point out that the paper appears to be French, but that is not a very helpful guide to dating as French paper was normally used by artists in England at the time. |
