Watson C. Squire (1838-1926) was born in Cape Vincent, New York. His father was a Methodist Episcopal reverend, and both of his parents were of English descent. His maternal grandfather served in the War of 1812. Squire attended Wesleyan University in Connecticut, and graduated in 1859. He would later serve as a trustee of Wesleyan for thirty-eight years. After graduation, he studied law. When the Civil War broke out he enlisted in the Union army, serving in Company F, Nineteenth Regiment of the New York Volunteer Infantry. He received an honorable discharge and went to Cleveland to practice law in 1862. However, he was called back up to the army, serving as a captain in a company of sharpshooters which was eventually selected to serve as guards to General Sherman's headquarters during his march to the sea. Captain Squire was then made trial judge advocate of the district of Nashville, middle Tennessee and northern Georgia and Alabama on the staff of General Rousseau. He supervised 2700 separate court cases in 21 different courts. He also served at the Battles of Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Resaca and Nashiville. He ended his service as a Colonel. After the war, he worked with Remington Arms Company in New York, eventually being promoted to secretary, treasurer, and manager.
