Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Waterworks. Until c. 2000 small Highland communities got their drinking water straight from the hill burns with minimal treatment. Such supplies are usually clean and safe, but do carry an obvious health risk, given that Scottish farm animals often carry a dangerous strain of the common gut bacteria E. coli. Now under an EU directive everyone gets treated water. A massive building programme has seen many water treatment plants built in the Highlands and Islands.
