ins, the Dona Ana Hills, and elsewhere. This deformation andvolcanic activity evidently occurred late in the Tertiary period, asTertiary strata are upturned and in places intersected by rh3^olite. FIRST ACCUMULATION OF GRAVELS. The structural troughs between the tilted mountain blocks formednatural lodgment areas for sediment. It can not be stated at presentwhether the sediments are partly of lacrustrine origin or whollysubaerial, nor is their maximum thickness known, but well recordsindicate a thickness of thousands of feet. The material exposed inthe terraces and penetrated by the shallow wells, consisting mainly ofcoarse sand and gravel, is presumably of river origin, but some of thedeep wells penetrate thick beds of sandy clay, possibly of lacustrineaccumulation. The surface of this first gravel accumulation is pre-served in a number of places, where it forms the upper terrace, 800feet above the river, described on page 11. U. S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEV WATER-SUPPLY PAPER NO. 188 PL. VI
