Summary

[edit]
Description

We have noticed these flies sitting on the top of still water in water holes in a number of places.

These were sitting and waving their proboscis very fast up and down.

On close inspection, it appeared that the up and down action of the proboscis was causing an air flow which was pulling a substance on the surface of the water toward them. The fly then appeared to suck up the substance.
