Text Appearing Before Image:
ers in slow motiontoward the Salton Sink that are intercepted by the 400 wells of theCoachella Valley. The physical conditions which control the movements of theunderground waters may be readily inferred from the character ofthe deposits that fill the valley. Except about the borders thesedeposits are fine. This follows directly from the fact that theyare in part lake sediments and in part the outer edges of alluvialfans. Well drillers in the valley are able to sink wells to depths of600 or 800 feetby the hydraulic method, which can be used onlywhere no coarse material is encountered (fig. 2). The strata whichthey pierce are alternating layers of clay and sand with occasionalstreaks of very fine gravel. This alternation of fine and coarsematerial (fig. 3), which is essential to artesian conditions, existspresumably only in the northern end of the desert. Few bowldersare encountered (fig. 4), and these are about the borders of the. U. S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY WATER-SUPPLY PAPER NO. 225 PL.
