Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Wat Maheyong was built in 1438, and restored/rededicated in 1713. The main stupa is supported symbolically by eighty sculpted elephants, which are distributed around the base of its substantial platform. The elephants' trunks have now mostly disappeared, and their bodies have been heavily restored. A yellow silk band around the stupa indicates that the structure is venerated, and that some form of active worship takes place there. The Sri Lankan style of this stupa is evidenced by its bell-shaped dome; the square harmika (railing) atop the dome; and the chattra (honorific umbrella) above the harmika.
