Description

I found a single individual of this rarely-seen hoverfly on a dry lawn feeding on flowering wild carrots (Daucus carrota), within a large camping area. There were some patches of Mediterranean oak and alluvial hardwood forests nearby, and I presume this is where the species must be breeding.

Despite its flashy colours, this fly was rather difficult to identify amongst numerous Polistes sp. wasps that were feeding at the same time on these carrots flowers. A perfect example of Batesian mimicry!
