, when she lives in Georgetown? adding, Ifyou would so much like to meet with her, I will sendher a note this morning, asking her to appoint a timeto receive us. To express my pleasure would be im-possible, as I had all a young girls enthusiasm forpleasant reading, and to me, one who could writebooks appeared to belong to another world. In duetime a reply came to Annas note, inviting us to attendher reception on the following evening. My friend,Miss Hannum, did not care to go. I well rememberthe lovely moonlight night, mild and balmy. Takingthe horse-cars, we were at our destination in less thanan hour. Birds Nest Cottage, the fanciful yetfitting name Mrs. Southworth bestowed upon herhome, was a pretty, low cottage, overlooking thewaters of the Potomac. It was covered with vines, and I could clearly see that in the summer it must bea beautiful and picturesque spot. It had been sur-rounded by flowers, the evidences of whose past ex-istence appeared on the sides approaching the entrance.

MRS. K. D. K. X. SOUTHWORTH.From photograph from life, presented by her to Mrs. N. C. Maynard. NEW ACQUAINTANCES. 147 We were received by a colored man, who directed uswhere to lay our wraps, and were then shown into thedrawing-room, a long, low-ceiling apartment, hand-somely furnished, which was already well filled withladies and gentlemen in brilliant evening dress. Amongthe gentlemen the uniforms of the army and navy pre-dominated. We took seats in a corner, where we couldview the gay scene around us, when my attention wasdirected to a beautiful girl seated at the piano, playingsome low, sweet melody that rippled pleasantly throughthe flow of conversation without interfering with it.She was not above the medium height, but I think herface the most beautiful I ever saw. Her complexionwas dazzling fair, her eyes a deep, dark brown, whileher hair was of that rare shade, brown in theshadow, gold in the sun, and hung in long curlsover her neck and shoulders.
