MANY subjects of interest were discussed at thevarious meetings I had with Mr. Lincoln. Iremember calling his attention to a parody upon theChurch Litany, which was published in a prominentnewspaper of decided anti-abolition tendency. In my childish admiration for him, I felt that thecomposition and publication were downright crime, andthat the writer, especially, should be severely pun-ished. Had it not been for this feeling of indignationand wrong it doubtless would never have reached hisnotice. When I handed it to him he smiled and said,We can afford to let our enemies have a fling at us ;then he added, more seriously, It is a sorry wit thatcan find no better employment nor different weaponswith which to fight us than to trifle with sacredthings. The following is a copy of the parody:—
