A youth, calling himselfArthur Dudley, and claiming to be her son by him,was pensioned in 1588 by Philip II. of Spain, thoughhe was almost certainly an impostor who lied for thesake of a pension. In England several offenders wentto prison for alleging that the Queen and Dudleywere unduly intimate: Anne Dowe, of Brentford;Marsham, of Norwich; Robert Brooke, of Devizes;and some others. It would be equally rash to affirmthat these stories were altogether true or that theywere altogether false. The benefits bestowed uponDudley, being quite out of proportion to his publicservices, give them a certain colour of plausibility. He had been at Saint Quentin in the characterof Master of the Ordnance ; but that was almost hisonly title to distinction. Nevertheless, immediatelyon Elizabeths accession, he was made Master of theHorse and sworn of the Privy Council, and in 1564was created Baron Denbigh and Earl of Leicester.Other appointments given to him, quite early in the 334

Warwick Castle ■*- reign, were those of Chancellor of the County Palatine ofChester, High Steward of the University of Cambridge,and Chancellor of the University of Oxford. Moresubstantial benefits were the grant of the Manor, Lord-ship, and Castle of Kenilworth ; the Lordship andCastle of Denbigh ; lands in Lancashire, Surrey, Rutland,Denbigh, Carmarthen, York, Cardigan, and Brecknock ;the Manors of Caldecote and Pelynge in Bedfordshire ;and sixteen other estates in different parts of Englandand Wales. Last, but not least, he was accorded fourlicences to export wool. These various advantagesraised him from comparative poverty to be one of therichest men in the kingdom. He was able to spend^60,000—a sum equal to more than half a million ofour money—in the extension and improvement ofKenilworth Castle.
