From a photograph by L. C. Kcighley Peach. guys tower, WARWICK CASTLE, FROM THE DRIVE. Warwick Castle <*- married Alice, daughter of Gilbert de Segrave. Heleft no children, and the Earldom of Warwick con-sequently passed to his sisters son, William Beauchamp, who was father of Guy de Beauchamp. And so we take our leave of the Norman Earlsof Warwick. There were, as we have seen, bothgreat men and ordinary men among them. But Ifear I have failed to make any of them vital figures. The material is so scanty that I have no right totry. There is little but the stray references of oldchroniclers to build upon ; and on that foundationnothing very definite or characteristic can be built. The great men who stand out clearly in the period wehave passed through are men like Anselm, Lantranc,Thomas a Becket, and Simon de Montfort. The Earlsof Warwick of the period do not leave any definiteimpress. The possibilities of picturesqueness in ourhistory come later on.
