Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The William C. Rowland House, 201 Water Street at 2nd Avenue, Warren, Pennsylvania, July 2022. A fine example of the then-popular Italianate style of architecture, this lovely two-story residence dates to 1869 and, while lacking the brackets typically found underneath the projecting eaves on such houses' roofs, does indeed distinguish itself with its ornate woodwork elsewhere on the exterior: note the carved windowheads, arcaded verandas on the front and left side of the house featuring Doric pilasters and spindle balustrades, and unusual ribbing on the exterior walls. The house was built for William Charles Rowland (1829-1906), the Irish-born junior partner in the firm of Kirberger & Rowland, specialists in house and sign painting, glazing, and what today would be called interior decoration. Rowland lived in the house until his death, then passed it along to his three children, none of whom ever married and all of whom also lived in the house the rest of their lives. After the death of his last surviving child - his daughter Agnes, in 1961 at the age of 89 years - the house was finally sold out of the family's hands.
