Summary
[edit]DescriptionWarren Historic District - 20220726 - 03 - Levi Smith House.jpg |
English: The Levi Smith House, 408 Market Street, Warren, Pennsylvania, July 2022. Built in 1890, this two-and-a-half story residence is an early and dazzlingly eclectic example of Queen Anne architecture that borrows liberally from other aesthetics: here we have not only the requisite asymmetrical façade, corner tower, and multiple gables but also touches of the Romanesque (note the squat pyramidal roof crowning the tower, and the keystone-studded round-arched windows underneath) and the Italianate (not the widely overhanging, albeit bracketless, roof eaves; the segmentally-arched windows on the side elevations and the overall sprightly massing). Especially interesting is the round entrance porch on the south side of the façade where Classical detailing comes in the form of paired Doric columns and a handsome dentil row underneath the conical, finial-topped roof. Like the majority of Warren's luminaries of the era, Levi Smith (1844-1917) made his fortune as an oilman; a native of the Lehigh Valley, he arrived in town just as the boom was beginning and eventually helmed his own refinery, the eponymous Levi Smith Refining Company, one of the largest independent ones in the region. He was also well known around town for his philanthropic efforts, especially toward the local high school. Smith lived in the house until his death, and it remained in the hands of his descendants until 1943. |
