Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Warner Building, 257 Franklin Street, Buffalo, New York, January 2022. Built in 1920, this is a fine late-period example of the Chicago School of architecture with notably large floor-to-ceiling windows. You'll see Classical touches here and there, as is the wont of the style - the flat roof is undergirded consecutively by a prominent bracketed cornice and a row of egg-and-dart molding; the entrance is crowned consecutively with a simple entablature and a relief panel with the building's name engraved thereon; a circular drop medallion tops the stone-framed pier at each side of the façade - but other than that, the design is relatively bereft of ornamentation. The building was named for and constructed by the firm of Warner & Warner, a contracting company who was responsible for a goodly share of new building construction around the area at the time (notably, they built many of the homes in the upper-class Central Park subdivision). It was intended as leasable office space, and ended up being mostly occupied by motion picture companies who used the space as film exchanges, a business that flourished in this section of downtown Buffalo at the time. The building is now in use as a bar and restaurant.
