Summary
[edit]DescriptionWard-Holzworth House, Buffalo, New York - 20220603.jpg |
English: The Ward-Holzworth House, 201 Morris Avenue at Parker Avenue, Buffalo, New York, June 2022. Built in 1918, this one-and-a-half-story wood-framed residence in the tony Central Park section of the city is a textbook example of the Dutch Colonial Revival style, with its front-gabled gambrel roof with flared "kicks" on the side, symmetrical façade with centrally situated chimney, and Classical detailing on the enclosed front porch principally in the form of engaged Doric columns set between the windows. The placement of the main entrance on the side elevation (not visible from this angle) is a characteristic typical of early 20th-century iterations of the style. The house was built for William Breining Ward (1884-1929), who as partner in the eponymous firm of Ward & Ward headed up one of the world's leading manufacturers of bakery products, but he didn't live there for very long - he moved to New York City in 1922, where he would later die - nor did subsequent owner George Rodgers (1880-1924), who died suddenly aboard a Michigan Central train headed to Chicago on business for his employer, Manufacturers & Traders Bank, for which he served as vice-president. Much longer tenured as owner was Admiral Ernest "Shorty" Holzworth (1891-1969), who distinguished himself as an officer in the U.S. Navy during the First World War before climbing the civilian ranks to President of the Frontier Bronze Corporation of Niagara Falls. Holzworth inhabited the house from 1925 until he retired to Florida in 1957. |
