In order to give our readers a clear idea of the power of the BritishSouth Africa Company, we think it best to publish the official corre-spondence on the subject, as it enters into all the details of the com-panys powers. The correspondence grew out of the movement toreconstitute the administration powers of the British South Africa Com-pany (one of the results of the Jameson raid), which was done on thebasis given below. A British parliamentary paper, issued February 24, 1898, containsthe following documents: MR. CHAMBERLAIN TO HIGH COMMISSIONER SIR AL-FRED MILNER. Downing Street, January 13, 1898.Sir: I have, as you are aware, for a long time past given my earnestattention to the question of the future exercise of its administrativepowers by the British South Africa Company. 122
