Description

I see the fear and rage for the coming battle reflected in the face of this chariot horse figure.

In looking each figure in the eyes, I struck by the difference in faces of the soldiers and the horses. The soldiers seem calm and determined, perhaps before the march to battle. But the emotion in the face of this chariot horse makes it seem as if he is pulling against the harness in the moments before the charge.

Qin Shihuang was an innovator, especially with horses. He introduced mounted calvary in addition to using chariots. Horses are an important part of the terra cotta warrior exhibit.

The warriors and horses are from the funerary complex of Qin Shihuang, the first emperor of China. He lived from 259 to 210 BCE. The figures were discover in 1974 in Xian, China.
