The Valley of Death, ithas been appropriately named. It is a savage, barrengorge between two mountains. The desolation and thedeathlike quiet of the place depress the feelings. Not aspear of grass, not a shrub or tree, not a drop of water, nota living thing is to be seen in this solitary valley, the en-trance to the tombs. The tropical sun beats down on our heads with terriblepower, and we are glad for once to seek the shelter of anoverhanging rock, which casts a grateful shade. We learnto appreciate, more fully than ever before, the meaning ofthe words, - the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.We find, too, the advantage of having the little water girl,Fatima, with us. The porous earthen bottle keeps the wa-ter quite cool. A handkerchief, saturated with water andplaced on the head, gives much relief as we ride on in theglare of the noonday sun. We are in the midst of the tombs of thegreat men and women who lived more than three thousandyears ago.
