The ancient name of Nantes was Condivicnum,signifying, in Celtic etymology, the confluence of severalrivers. It was the capital of the Nannetes, who event-ually gave their own name to their metropolis, just asLutecia, the capital of the Parisians, became Paris, andCondate, the capital of the Rhedones, Rennes. Nantes,according to some historians, was founded by Namnes,three hundred years after the deluge ; but the truth is,the Nannetes appear to have been a people of com-paratively little enterprise ; and till the arrival of theNormans, in 834, led on by one of the Counts ofNantes, whom his subjects had discarded, the cityis little mentioned in history.
