ey were full of bird-life—parrots, parakeets,cockatoos, pigeons, woodpeckers, gapers and horn-bills, etc. A clear rocky stream flowed by theside of the hut, the sound of whose rushing watersby night and day was like music to the ear in thishot and thirsty land, whilst shaded as it was bybamboos and trees, it was a delightful spot tobathe in every morning and evening. I was weUpleased with my surrotmdings, and looked forwardto a successful and interesting stay. I fared weUthough the food was rough, and I subsisted chieflyon rice and papayas, together with pigeons, doves,parrots, and the smaller hombfll, called here talactic, aU of which fell to my gun. A NEGRITO FAMILY. (74 I MEET THE NEGRITOS 75 great deal of the forest seemed to be half smotheredwith large thickets of bamboo, and consequentlythe larger trees were rather far apart. There wasalso a climbing variety of bamboo, which scrambledup to the tops of the largest trees. The undergrowthin places was most luxuriant and consisted ofdifferent species of palms, rattans, tree-ferns,fandanus, giant ginger, pipers, pothos, begonias,bananas, caladiums, ferns, selaginellas and lyco-podiums, and many variegated plants. Growingon many of the trees were some fine orchids.Chief amongst them may be mentioned a verybeautiful vanda, which grew mostly on trees inthe open grass country, and which I witnessed infull bloom during my stay here. They presented awonderful sight. Out of the large sheaths offan-like leaves grew two grand flower-spikes,bearing from thirty to forty large white, chocolateand crimson flowers.
