GOOD-MORNING. FROM A PAINTING BY WALTER SH1RLAW. EGYPTIAN ANTIQUITIES FOUND IN AMERICA. Chapter Sixth. N the course of an excavation, made in December last, in asmall burial mound at Yalaha, Lake Harris (on the Ockla-waha), Sumter County, Florida, there was found a little figure(see the illustration), of ordinary brick-clay, identical in designwith many of the statuettes so common in the Egyptian tombsand known under the general name of Osirids. This little figurewas sent to me for examination at the Peabody Museum inCambridge; and, after a careful study, I have little hesitationin saying that all the facts I have been able to gather bearwitness against its genuineness, in so far as attributing it to theworkmanship of the builders of the Florida mounds is concerned.Nor can it be made a link in the chain of supposed evidenceby which it is sought to establish a belief in a connection ofthe early nations of America with the people of Egypt.
