Summary
[edit]DescriptionWalter J. Urbanski House, Cheektowaga, New York - 20221221.jpg |
English: The Walter J. Urbanski House, 31 Hunting Road, Cheektowaga, New York, December 2022. Built in 1957, this three-bedroom split-level suburban residence is the epitome of what's been retroactively dubbed "Midcentury Modern" residential architecture: the hunkered-down massing, sprawling shallow-pitched roof, preponderance of sleek lines and smooth-textured surfaces, angular forms, large windows, and particularly the understated and deeply recessed front entrance are all classic hallmarks of the style. Note also the eaves of the roof, which cantilever over the front exterior wall in a manner that highlights the heavy influence that Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie Style had on American Modernism. Original owner Walter Joseph Urbanski (1915-1982) was among the most prominent retail merchants of the local Polish-American community: just after returning from service in World War II, where as an Army corporal he saw action in the African-Sicilian campaign, he partnered with Edward Przylucki to cofound Lucki-Urban, a discount furniture and appliance store long headquartered on Broadway in the neighboring city of Buffalo. A noted financier, philanthropist and civic figure as well, Urbanski served at various times on the boards of the Erie Federal Savings & Loan Association, East River Savings Bank, and Villa Maria College, chaired the Catholic Charities Appeal, and was a member of the Bishop's Committee for Christian Home and Family. Urbanski lived in the house with his wife until his death. |
