| Description |
English: Milk churn stand at Walnut Grove farm ("Jimmy's") in the townland of Grange Lower. It is possibly the smallest in the county measuring only 48x45cms. The number 51 on the milk churn was the number used to identify the milk with the farm at the creamery in Goresbridge. Nearby lives the former milk churn collector Gerry Cass (?) whose company collected milk churns from as far away as Co. Wicklow. According to him, they lorry drivers also built a creamery in Co. Wicklow on Saturdays, their "day off", i.e. when there was no churn collection. He says that some farmers did not erect milk churn stands which made it very hard work for him lifting up to 20 gallons of milk, some farmers only built very unstable ones with two legs and a slab or plank across. On the way back from the creamery, the aluminium cans which did not contain skimmed milk (for baking brown bread or feeding pigs and calves) had to be filled with water as to not be blown off the cart, according to him.
