Summary
[edit]DescriptionWallsend colliery flare.jpg |
English: A metal pipe (top left) discharges a "roaring" flame of methane gas from Wallsend Colliery, c.1840, illuminating the night scene. Methane ("fire damp") was a major hazard at these "fiery collieries" and Wallsend had seen major explosions.
On the right, a fire consumes small coals that cannot be sold and must be burned. In right foreground are two coal-waggons being prepared for their journey to a Tyneside staith for export to the South. |
