Summary
[edit]DescriptionWallowa River (34302435761).jpg |
The Wallowa River begins in the mountainous wilderness of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, flowing generally northwest past the eastern Oregon communities of Enterprise and Wallowa. From there, the Wallowa moves north for 10 miles, becoming the Wild and Scenic Wallowa River, as designated by Congress in 1996. That 10-mile stretch, protected by the Bureau of Land Management and Oregon State Parks, is beautiful northeast Oregon at its best: pine forests; grass-covered hills; and layered river canyons. The Wallowa ends at the confluence with the Grande Ronde – another river designated for protection under the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act – with a railroad bridge clearly marking the change. The Wallowa River has an unusually long float season, according to Rivers.gov, from ice breakup in the spring to the fall freeze. It is also a national destination for fishing, known for its fall chinook, summer steelhead and rainbow trout.
