Summary
[edit]DescriptionWallingford (4) - Geograph-6787611-by-Martin-Tester.jpg |
English: Auto-train on the Wallingford branch (4) - 1968 Standing at the end of the line in Wallingford is GWR 0-4-2T 1466 & its single auto-coach. We weren't allowed to run into the disused station (which was not demolished until 1969) but stopped a few hundred yards short. This meant there was no platform & we had to leave & board the coach via the hinged steps that are fitted to auto-coaches. This is the point where the heritage railway has built its replacement station & it is surrounded by much development - a complete change from the open countryside seen here. On Easter Monday 1968 the Great Western Society, which had moved into its Didcot depot the previous year, operated an auto-train service on the nearby 2½ mile Wallingford branch. This ran from a junction at Cholsey & Moulsford station on the GWR mainline. (This has since been shortened to Cholsey). Public services had ceased in June 1959 but goods traffic to the Associated British Maltsters Ltd mill continued until 1981. Since then the branch has been taken over by the Cholsey & Wallingford Railway. Unfortunately the station at Wallingford has long been demolished & the site redeveloped. |
