English: Heraldic aedicule set into a wall of Old Moffat Church, Scotland, showing a difference of the arms of Clan Johnstone: Argent, a saltire sable between two mullets one in chief and one in base on a chief gules three cushions or (the undifferenced arms being without the mullets: Argent, a saltire sable on a chief gules three cushions or). Possibly arms of "Johnstone of Galabank" (now in town of Annan), Dumfries: Argent, a saltire sable between a mullet in chief and a rose in base gules and in flanks two garbs vert on a chief of the third three cushions or (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.546). The Chief of the Clan Johnstone (Earl of Hartfell, Marquess of Annandale) was seated at Lochwood Tower, Annandale, Scotland, 6 miles south of the town of Moffat. According to an information plaque at the graveyard entrance this represents the Coat of Arms for the Johnstone and Maxwell families. On the scant remains of the old church 910739 in the old graveyard in Moffat. |
