Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The former Clermont Hall building, 295-299 Wall Street at John Street, in the Stockade Historic District of uptown Kingston, New York, September 2020. An outstanding example of the French Second Empire as adapted for the purposes of a commercial building, the mansard roof atop this circa-1878 beauty is pierced by rows of dormer windows with panes in an interesting flowerlike shape as well as multiple chimneys, and sports exquisite original iron cresting along the roofline. Classical influences come into play in the large fourth-floor attic window facing Wall Street, whose three panes are divided by a pair of engaged Tuscan columns. The building was home to a succession of retail occupants, beginning with Thereon Johnston's wine and liquor store; the building took its current name about 1930.
