Summary
[edit]DescriptionWaiting for the Solar Eclipse (24557487394).jpg |
From the destruction of Dublin on Friday to the Edwardian elegance of the gentry in Clonbrock House. Just two of the group appear even aware that this photograph is being taken but this just adds to the charm of the shot! [/photos/gnmcauley/ Niall McAuley] Pointed out that the Gent at the center of our photo is the 4th Lord Clonbrock. He also points to a note in our catalogue which shows the difficulty sometimes encountered while entering the collections into the catalogue, see the comment from Niall below. [/photos/91549360@N03/ O Mac] is almost sure that the identity of the people in the photo are as follows: Left to Right back row
Left to Right front row
Some fantastic detective work continued today and I believe this has led to the exact date being identified, not only that but I think we have identified the name of the dog in this photo. What dog I hear you say, look again on the lap of the second lady from the right. The date is established as the 28th May 1900 - A total solar eclipse occurred on that day, Owen with evidence from other photos in the Catalogue has convinced me that this is the correct date. Niall agrees with Owen and suggests the following "Looking at this shot again in light of the eclipse photo, check the three standing at left. Edward Henry Churchill Crofton (white haired gent) is consulting a piece of paper - too small for a newspaper. I think Ethel Louisa Dillon and Robert Edward Dillon are both looking at Robert's pocket watch. They are checking how long it will be until the eclipse starts! They both have convinced me that the Dogs name is BOBS Fantastic work, well done [/photos/91549360@N03/ O Mac] and [/photos/gnmcauley/ Niall McAuley] Photographers: Dillon Family Contributors: Luke Gerald Dillon, Augusta Caroline Dillon Collection: Clonbrock Photographic Collection Date: 28 May 1900 Solar Eclipse NLI Ref: CLON868 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie |
