Description |
"Waiting for emancipation" , by Erik Pevernagie, oil on canvas, 80 x 100 cm
But this transformation into an empathic and listening human being is often merely wishful thinking. In a patriarchal world, women still feel dominated by the punitive power of a conservative system. In many countries, women are still enslaved and treated like underdogs of society, even being imprisoned for fancy driving a car, dancing, or singing. Since the suffragettes, the destiny of the female population has, of course, improved — no doubt about that. However, gender equality in our Western societies is a rather recent matter. Indeed, female egalitarianism and equal opportunity are still a current topic. When we realize that women were entitled to their proper bank account in France not earlier than 1965, we recognize we are always on thin ice. They had not a right to vote in Switzerland either, before 1971. Fairness and impartiality are the main points on women’s agenda, in their fight for equality
