Summary

[edit]
Description

On 6 February 1840, between 42 - 45 Māori rangatira signed the Waitangi sheet of te Tiriti o Waitangi. In search of further signatures, William Hobson and his official party – including Captain Nias, Henry Williams, and Charles Baker – rode inland from Waitangi on the morning of 10 February. With them was the Waitangi sheet.

The group covered the 15 miles to the Church Missionary Society mission station at Waimate by lunchtime, and were met by Richard Taylor, the mission head, and his assistants George Clarke and Richard Davis. That evening a meeting was held and six rangatira signed te Tiriti. You can learn more about who signed here: www.nzhistory.net.nz/politics/treaty/location/waimate-nor....

There is no record of anyone explaining the Treaty’s contents, but it is likely that those Waimate chiefs who had signed at Waitangi on 6 February (including Reweti Atuahaere, Wiremu Hau, and Hara) had already given an account of its provisions to those who had remained at Waimate.

Above is a photograph of the only remaining building at the Waimate mission station, the house originally occupied by George Clarke. It was taken by R Anderson in January 1967, and comes from the National Publicity Studios collection.
