X Bayreuth Echoes. ONE of the greatest obstacles in the way of attend-ing a performance at Bayreuth is the difficultyof getting to Bayreuth at all. It requires consider-able ingenuity, and whoever has discovered the routethere may be sure that he knows more than most ofthe German railroad officials. Of course, I didnt ex-pect that the sleepy Belgians in Ostend would be ableto direct rne, but I did think that the officials in Aixla Chapelle, or in a railroad centre like Cologne, wouldknow the way. It was not, however, until I hadreached Mainz—after traveling from 3:50 a. m. till4:28 P. M.—that I could obtain fairly detailed direc-tions. And yet placards announcing the Parsifalperformances were hanging up in the depots all alongthe route! I traveled on the lightning express from Cologne toMainz.
