Since that time the work has seldom been absent from the Metro-politan, the latest production being that of 1915, with Kurt, Gadski, Matzenauer, Berger,Ruysdael and Braun. The story is beauti-ful and compelling, the situations by turnthrilling and pathetic, while the glorious musicwritten by the master to accompany the ad-ventures of his mythical personages is easilyunderstood and appreciated by the averagelistener. Wotan has been warned by Erda, theEarth Goddess, that if Alberich regains the Ringthe gods must perish. Brooding over thisimpending fate, Wotan descends to earth andweds the goddess; this union resulting in ninesplendid daughters, the Walf^iire, who are toaid in the salvation of the gods.
