SCENE I—Interior of Huntings Hut in theForest—a Large Tree rises through the Roof The prelude represents a fearfulstorm in the forest, in the midst of whichSiegmund rushes in exhausted, and fallsby the fire. Sieglinde gives him refresh-ment and feels drawn to him by somestrange attraction. While they are con-versing, Hunding enters, and after ques-tioning the stranger, recognizes in him hismortal enemy. He says, Thou shalthave shelter from the storm to-night, butto-morrow thou diest! and goes to hisroom, bidding Sieglinde prepare his even-ing drink. She does so but puts a drugin it to make him sleep soundly, and re-turns to Siegmund, unable to control herinterest in the mysterious youth who hasso strangely affected her. Then occurs the lovely Liebeslied, thegem of this beautiful first act.
