| Description | This bright red WACO ATO “Taperwing” biplane, owned and flown by Marty Cantlon, is a reproduction made in USA in the early 1990s. It has a distinctively shaped top wing, tapering from the centre to the wing tips, unlike the mostly straight-winged aircraft of 1929. The attractive aircraft was imported into NZ five years ago and is based in Tauranga. The owner says it is an absolute delight to fly, with matching performance. Powered by a 275hp Jacobs 7-cylinder radial engine with a Hamilton Standard constant speed propellor, the aircraft has a normal cruise of 130 – 150 mph and a four-hour endurance. In keeping with air show performers in the 1930s, the paint scheme on this particular aircraft advertises the Gilmore Oil Company (a California company that was subsequently absorbed into the Mobil Corporation).
