Summary

[edit]
Description
English: WWII pillbox beside Low Road. The type FW3/24 pillbox seen at right is situated beside Low Road which runs parallel with the 'Breckland Line' (the railway line to Norwich), north of the B1382. It was constructed of clay brick and reinforced concrete in the years 1940/41, forming part of the Eastern Command Corps and Command Stop Lines of which there existed three. This one runs from the River Colne in Essex via Wakes Colne and Bures, along the River Stour to Sudbury and Long Melford, and thence to Bury St. Edmunds and the River Lark at Mildenhall. Its final stretch (known now as the Command Line) was via Littleport along the line of the River Great Ouse to King's Lynn. The pillbox is recorded in the Defence of Britain database and has the site number S0002747. See > 1618558 for a closer view.
