Summary

[edit]
Description
English: WWII Norcon pillbox, Docking. It used to guard the driveway to the Hall which during the war was the headquarters for nearby RAF Bircham. Another pillbox of the same type is nearby, on the other side of the drive. Norcon pillboxes were made from pre-cast concrete pipes of 6 feet diameter. They are usually 4 feet high and have 6 loopholes, each measuring 4 x 10 inch, that were cut out of the sides of the pipe. They weigh 32 cwt and have 4 inch thick walls, and were deemed to be bullet-proof within 24 hours of casting. Norcon pillboxes were constructed without the use of steel re-inforcing and relied entirely on sandbags for the protection of their occupants.
