English: Un marché sur une place avec une fontaine devant la Teinturerie E. BUGUET
Il s'agit de l'ancienne place du Château à Cherbourg, devant le théâtre, qui est l'actuelle place De Gaulle. Durant l'Occupation, elle avait pris le nom de "place maréchal Pétain" ; elle fut rebaptisée "place général de Gaulle" le 14 juillet 1944, lors d'une grande cérémonie de liesse populaire franco-américaine, dont il subsiste de nombreuses photos. Depuis plus d'un siècle, le marché traditionnel aux fruits, légumes et fleurs continue de s'y tenir le jeudi. La fontaine monumentale de fonte (fin XIXe siècle) s'appelle "fontaine Mouchel", du nom d'un mécène, Mr Mouchel, directeur du journal "Le Phare de la Manche qui légua 25 000 Fr à la ville à l'unique condition de construire une fontaine monumentale, ce qui fut fait à la mort du donateur par Louis Eugène Gutelle, architecte. La maison située à droite de la teinturerie Buguet, victime d'un bombardement allié, avait entièrement brûlé. Reconstruite vers 1950, elle abrita le magasin "Jean-Bart", devenu ensuite "Prisunic", qui annexa bientôt tout le bâtiment à sa droite, avant que l'immeuble ne fût entièrement reconstruit en galerie marchande vers 1983 ; il se partage à présent entre plusieurs commerces et appartements.
