Title |
WMID-F92DC6. Roman Polden Hill brooch (front, profile, reverse). |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper-alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (flat wing ends type, Western Group), cf. Mackreth 2011, 5.a2. pg 76, no. 1575, Plate 49. Mass: 16.8g; length: 68.8mm; width: 26.6mm; depth: 20.8mm. The brooch is T-shaped in plan. The side-wings are semi-cylindrical with pierced end-caps holding the axial rod. There is a lug on the head, through which an external chord passes. The wire of the external chord also forms the spring, which is coiled around the axial-rod from both ends towards the centre of the spring-cover. Usually, the central pin is formed from the wire of one side of the spring. But in this case, there is a separate pin in the centre of the spring. This is looped around the axial-rod with the end being bent around to form a stop which gives the pin its tension. On one half of the spring, the diameter of the wire narrows towards the centre, and the flattened end is almost flush with the pervious coil. On the other half of the spring, the wire thickens towards the centre, and rather than forming a pin in the middle as is more usually seen, the spring terminates in an angular break or cut (this is largely obscured by the pin). There is a filed notch on the edge of the spring case, to one side of the lug on the head, which appears to fulfil no purpose in the mechanism. All of this suggests that the unusual pin mechanism may represent a repair/modification. The bow is arched in profile, with a complete catch-plate and pin-rest, with a sub-triangular central cavity. There are two lateral grooves decorating the ends of the side-wings, and a median rib runs down the top portion of the bow from the lug on the head. The brooch has a blue/green patina/surface, with some green adhesions, particularly on the front of the bow, and some brown adhesions (possibly iron corrosion) on the top end of the pin. The brooch is lightly pitted in parts and there has been some loss of surface around the centre of the pin. However, the brooch is in exceptionally complete condition. |
