Description
English: Cast copper-alloy brooch of Roman Colchester derivative Polden Hill (flat wing ends type, West Midlands), cf. Mackreth 2011, 4.b. pg. 72, Plate 46. Mass: 7.3g; length: 45mm; width: 28mm; depth: 13mm. The brooch is T-shaped in plan. The side-wings are semi-cylindrical, with pierced end-caps which secure the iron axial-rod. The heavily corroded copper-alloy spring is partially covered by iron corrosion from the axial rod. The pin is missing. Unusually for this type of brooch, there is no hook or lug on the head to secure an external chord. On the front of the side wings there are two vertical ridges at each end. The bow is arched in profile and tapers to the rounded foot. There is an incomplete catch-plate on the reverse of the lower portion of the bow. The brooch has a green patina, but areas have been lost, leaving a pitted, lighter green surface in parts.
